Modern Operating systems need large amounts of RAM just to run. Some journalling file systems such as ZFS need 1 Gb of RAM for each Tb of storage that your computer has.

If you have too little RAM your computer will be sluggish and slow to do almost anything. Most computers have the capacity to increase this amount. RAM prices vary from week to week, when demand is high the price will increase.

Typically the cheapest time to buy is the beginning of October. Server, Workstation and older RAM will usually be more expensive than mainstream models.

You don't have to buy new RAM as pre-tested refurbished RAM can last for many years. We have a wide array of new and pre-tested RAM in stock with thousands of different models available with a two day lead time.

Your motherboard manual or laptop specification will list the type of RAM needed for your computer. It's essential to also test your existing RAM as not every memory module or combination is compatible.

For modern Operating Systems 4 Gb is the minimum you should have and 8 Gb is recommended. For gaming and professional use 16 Gb will increase your system's ability to get things done. For workstation and AI 32 Gb is the starting point.

In every case, look at what you are doing. Those who wish to load large LLMs may need 192 Gb of RAM and 40 Gb of VRAM (on your GPUs)! Many video professionals need 64 Gb or more.
